Four feet of Snow in 24 Hours in Western US

Published : 17-Dec-2016 06:26

There have been some huge snow falls in the USA over the past 36 hours.

Mammoth Mountain in California reported it received 1.2m (four feet) of snow on upper slopes in 24 hours up to yesterday (as pictured above), and that the snow is still falling.

Many other ski areas in California, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have reported snowfalls of 30-60cm (1-2 feet) in 24 hours also.

These are just the latest in what is now three weeks of heavy snowfall in most Western and Eastern ski regions in the US. Mammoth's base has now reached 3.3m (11 feet) - one of the deepest reported in the world at present.

In Wyoming Jackson Hole has had more than 1.2 metres (four feet) of snow in the past week and says it has had around 5m, of snow fall already this autumn.

All the snow has caused some practical and safety issues. A car was swept off a mountain road near Jackson Hole by an avalanche in the past few days.

The snow, that has been falling since thanksgiving after the warmest, driest November on record in the US, is expected to continue to fall up to at least Christmas weekend but at a diminishing rate with 1-2 feet (30-60cm) more expected in the coming week in Western ski states.
