Snow Returns to the Alps

Snow Returns to the Alps

Published : 19-Nov-2018 05:09

The snow has started falling in the Alps again as temperatures drop after a warm few weeks.

So far up to 10cm accumulations have been reported today in parts of Austria and Switzerland, but the snowfall is widespread and expected top continue in many areas throughout the coming week, with most areas seeing at least some snow by Wednesday.

The cold temperatures mean that snowmaking systems have also been running full blast at some areas. Resorts like Iscghl, which has a reputation for offering one of the biggest (if not the biggest) ski areas open in Europe (if not the world) in the early weeks of it season from late November are at maximum snowmaking capacity.

The biggest accumulations so far reported are 10cm for Obergurgl in Austria and Davos in Switzerland and 8cm at Folgarida in Italy. Lech, pictured above today, says it's had 5cm of snowfall.

Whilst most areas are expected to get 20-40cm of snow over the coming week, current forecasting models predict that some areas in the Dolomites and Southern Alps like Valloire in France and San Martino in Italy may get up to 90cm (Three feet) of snow.
