Mother Campaigns on Chairlift Safety After Adult Son Dies From Fall

The mother of a snowboarder who died after falling nearly 50 feet from a chairlift wants to make the use of the safety bar mandatory.
32-year-old Donovan Romero fell from the lift at Keystone Ski Resort in Colorado in December sustaining multiple injuries. He died more than four months later from the resulting traumatic brain injury, having never regained consciousness.

Mt Hutt Cancel May Opening Plans

New Zealand's Mt Hutt, which had announced plans to open for its 2025 season a fortnight early*, this Saturday May 31st, has said recent weather conditions mean it now has to cancel that plan.
"Unfortunately, the last few weeks of weather have been very unkind to us and we won't be able to open for Kings Birthday weekend as we had all hoped. We will provide further updates as conditions change - but in the meantime thanks for your understanding!" the centre's Snow report today reads.

Vail Offers More Austrian Ski Areas On Epic Pass

Vail Resorts has added five leading Austrian ski areas to its global season pass, the Epic Pass.
The company announced that Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Salzburgerland were joining the pass as well as Mayrhofen and Hintertux in the Tirol's Ziller Valley. Epic Pass holders will be entitled to five consecutive days skiing in each of the two provinces. A fifth area, Silvretta Montafon, located in the province of Vorarlberg, was announced on Friday.They join the Arlberg region around Lech and St Anton which has been on the pass for some years, holders are entitled to three consecutive days skiing there.

Host of The Ski Podcast to ski all UK indoor snow centres in single day

[b]Iain Martin, host of The Ski Podcast, is challenging himself to ski all five of the UK's indoor snow centres in a single day to raise funds for Snow Camp.
On Friday 30 May, Iain will travel to Tamworth Snowdome, Chill Factore in Manchester, Snozone Yorkshire, Snozone Milton Keynes and The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

Pre-season Snowmaking and Snowfall in Australia

[b]With just under three weeks to go until the likely start of Australia's 2025 ski season over the King's Birthday Long Weekend, which includes a holiday Monday on June 9th (unless anywhere opens early), the country's ski areas have seen a temperature dip down to snowmaking-possible lows as well as a few centimetres of snowfall this weekend.

Ischgl Spending €50m on 3 New 8 Seater Chairlifts

One of the biggest ski area investments of the next few seasons has been announced by Austria's Ischgl and its Swiss neighbour Samnaun who'll together be spending 50 million euros on three new 8-seater D-Line chairlifts with weather protection hood and seat heating for their shared Silvretta Arena ski area.

Closed Dry Ski Slope Set to Reopen

A dry ski slope located at Aldershot in Hampshire is set to reopen after it was closed suddenly at the start of April when its former operator ran into financial difficulties.[/b]
Although owned by the local Rushmoor Borough Council, Aldershot was one of several dry slopes and many other leisure facilities across England run by a charitable trust called Active Nation which ceased operating at the start of April.

Mount Hutt in NZ to open early

Mt Hutt ski resort in New Zealand has announced that it will open two weeks early on 31 May, becoming the first resort down under to open for the southern 2025 winter.
It will be the earliest opening since 2009 and has been prompted by a huge storm that delivered 120 centimetres of new snow. The original scheduled opening date was 13 June.

New Zealand Ski Area Opening 150 Hectares of New Terrain

One of the biggest terrain expansions in New Zealand ski history is coming this winter when Cardrona Alpine Resort opens 150 hectares of newly lift-accessed skiable terrain served by a new high-speed 6-seater Doppelmayr chairlift in its Soho Basin area.

La Niña Goes Neutral

Climatologists in America have determined that the weak La Niña system in the Pacific which brings warmer weather and is credited with delivering the huge snowfalls to Japan last winter and some decent dumps in the Pacific Northwest Corner of North America too, has now faded way.

New freestyle dry slope in Cardrona, New Zealand to open in June 2025

A new dry slope facility that will allow elite freestyle athletes to train all year round is nearing completion.
Located in the Cardrona Valley near Cardrona Alpine Resort, the location means skiers and snowboarders can perfect their jumps on to air bags or snow depending on the season.

More Snow Factories For Australian Ski Slopes

Australia's 2025 ski season is due to kick off in a month's time, on the country's King's Birthday long-weekend which this year begins on June 7th. Traditionally almost all Australian ski areas open that weekend, unless it has been cold and snowy enough for any to have opened early. In recent years though, more centres have been investing in all-weather snowmaking machines from companies including TechnoAlpin, alongside traditional snowmaking arsenals, to ensure their seasons start on time.

Final Weekend Of Season For Ski Areas in 10 Countries

Although most northern hemisphere ski areas have now closed for the season and much of the snowfall focus has switched to the southern hemisphere (resorts in New Zealand have reported up to an estimated 1.32m/4 feet over the past few days) around 100 areas, the majority in Japan and the USA, kept operating into May. Of these about a quarter, in 10 countries, are due to close at the end of Sunday.
