Cervinia Unveils Record Breaking €197m Lift System

Published : 06-Aug-2026 06:53

Cervinia has celebrated 90 years since its first cable car by announcing a new €197m lift connection between the resort and Plateau Rosa.

The new connection, christened Cervino The One, is actually two successive 3S lifts, which will make the ascent in just under 17 minutes. It's hoped it will be operational in December 2029 in time for the 29-30 ski season.

The two separate but connected systems from manufacturer Leitner, include a 1,850m long first section from Breuil to Plan Maison. The second link from Plan Maison to Plateau Rosa will be over 4km long for a total length of nearly 6km. The lift will ascent nearly 1,500 vertical metres and operate at a high speed of 8 metres per second (almost 30 kilometres per hour ). The capacity on the route will be 3,000 passengers per hour and the three cables supporting cabins helps to make them wind stable at high altitudes.

Cervinia officials say the lift company, which will fund the lift in partnership with finance from the Aosta Valley region, already started some preparatory work for the new lifts earlier this year. The main works will commence next year with a 2-year construction schedule.

The lift will be powered by renewable energy supplied by CVA (Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque), which produces hydroelectric and wind energy. There will also be photovoltaic panels at each station for the additional production of solar energy. There'll also be geothermal energy harvested at the Plan Maison station to heat the building. Heat pumps will also be used at all the stations.
