Italy's high altitude resort of Livigno has transformed its village centre into a kilometre‑long cross‑country ski track this week, using snow preserved from last winter.
While many resorts including Kitzbuhel, Murren and Levi, now stockpile snow to secure early‑season openings in autumn, Livigno has for many years used the same technique to stage one of the Alps' more unusual summer traditions.
The 44th Gara da li Contrada took place last night, with the village's pedestrian zone becoming a kilometre-long corridor of real snow, packed with spectators.
One of the evening's highlights is an all‑comers race, where participants don historic skiwear and to compete.
Daytime highs in the village at 1850m are touching +20C this week so it's not expected the snow will last long.
