Snow Forecast Summary - January 23rd 2009
Published : 23-Jan-2009 10:54
As expected... significant quantities of snow this week brought the return of powder skiing conditions to most of the major Alpine area. Areas of the French and Swiss Alps have had anything up to one metre of fresh in the past week, with lesser (though still good) quantities elsewhere. Italy's superb season continues, with upper base depths of more than three metres being reported by half a dozen resorts now, and further South the Spanish resorts of Sierra Nevada and Formigal have two metre bases.Driving This Weekend
Just a quick note for those of you heading out this weekend... be prepared for major snows on your journey. The latest in a succession of snowfalls is in progress tonight (Friday) and likely to affect much of the Swiss, French, Italian and Austrian Alps. The Pyrenees, French and Spanish, will also be in on the action.
Snow will continue through the weekend and snow-chains will likely be required to reach many resorts. Although this is an off-peak weekend, travel disruptions are possible in the most popular areas.
Weather and Snow Next Week
What can we say? If conditions this week were "Classic", next week they're set to go "Epic"!
As noted above, major snowfall will occur through the weekend with frequent heavy snows through until Tuesday. There's a possibility of clearer weather late in the week. This is likely to be the pattern across most of The Alps for at least the next week.
That do you lucky sods that are heading out this weekend??? 8)
