The 2025 ski season is in full swing in the southern hemisphere with most Chilean and Australian resorts open after heavy snowfall, while a few northern hemisphere areas like Tignes and one Scandinavian centre are open.

New Highest Lift in Australia Starts Spinning on Friday

It's been a good few days at Australia's largest resort, Perisher, with the resort reporting powder conditions after another 35cm of fresh snow arrived overnight.
The resort also announced that their new Mt Perisher 6 Chairlift (the 'Mt P 6') is now ready for guests to access Australia's highest lifted point and that it will spin for the first time this Friday 27 June.

US Ski Area Celebrates Country’s End Of Slavery

The one US ski area that still has lifts and slopes open, above 6,000m, has staged its annual; 'Freedom Shred' in honour of the anniversary of the ending of slavery in the country.
Since 2021 Juneteenth, officially 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' has been a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery for most in the US in 1865.

Nevados de Chillán, Chile, with heavy snow this week (and there's more on the way).
The 2025 southern hemisphere ski season is now fully underway with openings across Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile following major snowfalls, while summer skiing begins in Europe and two US ski areas remain open as others close after long seasons.

Buy your own gondola cabin from La Plagne

Over one hundred six-seater gondola cabins from the old Roche de Mio lift – first constructed in 1975 - are being sold, with a starting price of EUR500 each.
You'll have to collect it from France, and you'll definitely need somewhere to put it in the UK, but later this month there's a chance to buy your own piece of La Plagne history.

Heavy Snowfall as South America’s 2025 Season Starts

There have been some huge snowfalls in the Andes as the 2025 season in South America has begun. Nevados de Chillan, which is yet to announce an opening date, is pictured above on Friday.
Chile's Valle Nevado is the first on the continent to open, reporting over 56cm (nearly two feet) of snowfall in its first 24 hours of operations. It's opened about a third of its terrain initially and the snow is expected to keep dumping through to Tuesday.

New Zealand's 2025 Season Fully Underway

New Zealand's 2025 season is underway with Cardrona (pictured), Coronet Peak, Mt Hutt and The Remarkables opening earlier today.
These are not the first to open for 2025 with the Stratford Ski Club opening their Manganui ski field last weekend before rain stopped play and Whakapapa has had a snow play area maintained by all-weather snowmaking open at weekends too, however they are the first to fully open daily for the season.

It's been quite the opening week for Hotham, and other Australian resorts...
The 2025 southern hemisphere ski season is off to a strong start, with Australia blessed by a big snowstorm. Skiing has also begun in New Zealand, Lesotho, and soon South America, while Val d'Isère opens briefly for summer and the last U.S. resorts wrap up this weekend.

Dave Ryding confirms he will retire at end of 25/26 winter season

Dave Ryding, the only British skier to win an Alpine World Cup race, has confirmed today his intention to retire at the end of the 2025/26 season.
The 38-year-old, a regular on the World Cup circuit since 2009, made the announcement today ahead of a season which will see Ryding push for a fifth Olympic Winter Games appearance in Milan-Cortina in February.

Altitude Comedy Festival Returns to Mayrhofen in 2026

The Altitude Comedy Festival, widely regarded as the world's leading alpine comedy event, has officially announced its 2026 dates and first wave of performers.
The festival is set to return to Mayrhofen in Austria from 30 March to 03 April 2026.

Eurostar Announce London–French Alps Connecting Service Expanded For Winter 25-26

Eurostar has announced its snow train service between London St Pancras and the French Alps, Eurostar Snow, will return for next winter, the 2025/26 ski season. Tickets will go on sale in a month's time.
The service, which involves a train change at Lille, will run for longer next season than last and the company says there'll be a new seven-day return option, alongside the existing eight-day return.

Val d'Isère Open For Summer Ski Season

Val d'Isère has opened for summer skiing on its Pisaillas Glacier. Skiing is available between 07:00-12:00 between for four weeks until 6th July.
Access to the resort's summer ski area has been made possible by the opening of the Col de l'Iseran allowing access to the facilities for amateurs and professional visitors alike.

Australia’s Season Starter Super Snowstorm Total Tops 50cm So Far

Some Australian ski resorts have now reported more than 50cm of fresh snowfall from a huge snowstorm that's moved up from the south in a polar blast from the south.[/b]
The storm's arrival was almost perfectly timed, hitting on the first day of the season for most Aussie areas. Some Australian weather forecasters are predicting it's potentially going to be the biggest snowfall in three years by the time is starts to weaken on Monday, with snowfall totals of 70-90cm forecast.

Australia First in Southern Hemisphere To Open For 2025

Most ski areas in Australia have opened for the 2025 season today, with a perfectly timed snow storm, forecast to be the largest in three years, starting to dump yesterday evening.
So far resorts have reported up to 20cm of snowfall but totals by the time the storm blows through on Tuesday/Wednesday are expected to be nearer 60-90cm.

Australia’s Season Starting as Major Snowstorm Due to Hit

Most Australian ski areas will open on Saturday, June 7th, despite some not yet having enough snow cover to open a full ski run.
The snow issue could be solved quickly though as opening day should herald a multi-day storm set to bring 60-90cm of snowfall to Aussie slopes by Tuesday.

Charity Fundraisers Hiking Oxford Circus to Val Thorens in Ski Boots

Friends Reuben Gray and Matt Brinkley are taking on an extraordinary challenge: walking 801 miles from central London to Val Thorens in the French Alps—both fully dressed in ski boots and ski clothing.
Their ambitious journey will span 45 days, taking them through Kent to Dover, across the Channel to Dunkirk by ferry, and onward through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Switzerland, before finally reaching Val Thorens.

Thredbo to open for 2025 Australian winter this weekend

[b]Thredbo Resort in Australia has announced that their 'Friday Flat' run will officially open for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday 07 June, marking the start of their 2025 winter season.
Thanks to over 50cm of fresh snowfall and optimal snowmaking conditions, guests will be able to enjoy their first laps of the season on Friday Flat, serviced by the Easy Does It Chairlift, Magic Carpets, and their dedicated hike park.

June marks the start of the 2025 ski season in the southern hemisphere, with most resorts in Australia, New Zealand, and the Andes expected to open by late month. By the end of June, nearly 100 resorts across six continents should be open.
Arapahoe Basin, Colorado, USA will be open for the first couple of weekends in June, and maybe beyond.

Folkestone Dry Slope Centre Gets New Operator

A sports centre that includes one of the UK's longer established dry slopes appears to have been saved thanks to a new operator taking it over.
The Folkestone Sports Centre closed unexpectedly late last summer when the charitable trust running in ran into financial problem. Now a new charity operator, The Sports Trust, a not-for-profit charity based in the town, has taken over.
